![]() ![]() The men of Kosala were strong and upright, free from impure thoughts or the greed of gold. The people went about their work in honest duty and no one questioned the will of heaven. Neighbours lived in kindness side by side, fitful to their rites and scriptures. Every wife was loving and faithful to her husband and in every home there was true devotion. Saffron and sandal paste was on their foreheads, flowers were in their hair, and on their necks were ornaments of gold. On their arms were bracelets and their ears were full of earrings of gold and gems. The women of Kosala were fair and beautiful in their graceful garments. Kosala was a land of plenty, rich in cattle and corn, so that no man begged of another and no one was in need. No lie was heard amongst those people, and no unkind word spoilt the happy households in which they lived. Truth and justice, peace and goodness were in that city, and its people had no envy of other men. The city of Ayodhya rose in proud beauty like Indra's city of old, and its temples and towers could be seen from afar. Like the ancient king Manu, Dasaratha ruled his people with a father's loving grace. He was a great as Indra and as kind as Kubera, and he ruled his kingdom in goodness and truth. He was born of the ancient Solar race and his name was Dasaratha. Long, long ago in the city of Ayodhya, there lived a king who was loved by all his people in the land of Kosala. ![]()
